It is understood police had to dodge slates being thrown at them during the stand-off in Infirmary Street.

Several attempts were made to enter into negotiations with the unnamed man, who started his rooftop protest in the early hours, during the incident which happened close to the junction with Abraham Street.

An area between Mosley Walk and Rockcliffe Street was sealed off by police, and paramedics were placed on standby in case of any immediate emergency.

A police spokesman said the incident had first developed at around 3.30am and the situation had remained under review throughout the day, with a number of officers at the scene.

"The turntable ladder was requested, from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, but that was more for public safety considerations," he added.

The man continued to have shouted conversations with representatives from the emergency services while walking along the roof's ridgeline, between chimney posts and aerials.

Neighbours also prevented children from playing nearby to guard against being hit by any stray missiles.

One woman in her 50s, who asked not to be named, said: "This is the third night he's done this around here.

"The police have got better things to be doing with their time."

Another neighbour, in his 40s, added: "It's just a joke when you consider everything that's been happening in Manchester, and he's been up there all day, taking people away from dealing with other stuff."
