THE road where a 13-year-old boy suffered ‘serious head injuries’ has been branded as a ‘drag track’.

People who live in Willows Lane, Accrington, said they frequently see cars speeding up and down the road and crashes have happened in the past.

It comes after a teenager was hit by a black Vauxhall Corsa on the road at its junction with Richmond Hill Street and was taken to hospital by helicopter on Saturday.

Lancashire County Council has ordered a speed survey on the road after concerns were raised.

Scott Furness, 35, lives on the road with his girlfriend and went out to see the child after hearing a bang.

He said: “You hear bangs all the time outside, but this one felt different.

“I went over just to keep him calm and told him to keep still.

“Not long ago there was a crash just along this road, you see a lot of people driving along the road picking up speed.

“A lot of people came out, there was screaming and crying, I tried to keep the lad’s mother calm as well.”

The incident happened at around 5pm and the boy was taken to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

In January a 72-year-old women suffered a bleed on the brain and a broken leg after being hit by a Renault Megane on the road, which has a 30mph speed limit.

Adam Cant, 37, said: “There’s always people speeding down the road, it’s like a drag strip.

“It’s only been two or three months since we last had a crash on this road.

“The car had no chance of stopping, the boy ran straight out onto the road from nowhere.

“It was so shocking to see the boy on the floor.”

Calls have been made to put speed cameras on the road to help catch those who are speeding.

Mahboob Ali, 26, said: “People are speeding up and down the road all the time.

“If police put a camera outside it would catch quite a few people for sure.”

Council bosses said they have been looking into speeding on the road.

A spokesman said: “We meet regularly with the police to discuss speeding issues and have ordered a speed survey to be carried out in Willows Lane following concerns which have recently been raised.

“We have previously deployed interactive speed signs on Willows Lane to remind drivers of the speed limit and will consider the results of the speed survey to inform any future action.”

A police spokesman said: “A 13-year-old boy suffered head injuries in the serious injury road traffic collision.”
