A PROLIFIC burglar has been banned from Darwen town centre after being convicted of numerous burglaries of commercial premises in the area.

Blackburn magistrates heard at least one firm had been put out of business after being repeatedly targeted by Thomas McClung, who had recently served a four month prison sentence for offences of burglary.

McClung, 38, of Elswick Street, Darwen, was made subject to a criminal behaviour order which prohibits him from entering Darwen town centre for 12 months and from associating with Stephen Gregson.

PC Scott Boast told the court it had become clear there was a long-term issue with break-ins at commercial properties in the town centre.

"One of the most prolific offenders is Thomas McClung and we believe he and Stephen Gregson work together quite often," said PC Boast.

The Criminal Asbo requested by the police included a night time curfew for 12 months and a condition that McClung could not carry any articles for use in connection with theft.

But District Judge James Clarke removed both conditions saying the order was not meant to punish for previous crimes and said going equipped was already a criminal offence.
