TWO burglaries took place in Blackburn on Tuesday targeting Asian gold.

Thieves smashed their way into a home in Openshaw Drive between 6pm and 10pm and stole cash and jewellery.

Police said they had smashed the glass in the rear patio doors to reach through and unlock the door.

During the same time frame a home in Beardwood Brow was attacked with thieves forcing entry through the conservatory at the rear of the house. A quantity of Asian gold was stolen, police said.

No arrests have been made and both are under investigation.

They said both bear the ‘hallmarks’ of Asian gold burglaries and have issued advice to owners.

Despite a number of gangs being convicted, victims are rarely reunited with their jewellery.

Anthony Ford, watch liaison officer, said: “We are beginning the holiday season soon and many homes will be left unoccupied for weeks in some cases.

“If your home is specifically targeted, there is little you can do about it. You can, however, do things to reduce the chance of your home being targeted in the first place.

“The two things that burglars consider most dangerous to their ‘occupation’ are burglar alarms and CCTV.

“When selecting a home to attack, burglars consider these two security features more than anything else.

“If you have to keep gold, jewellery or other valuables in your home please fit a reliable alarm and CCTV system, keeping valuables in the loft, install a fireproof safe, consider fitting a patlock to secure patio-style doors and be careful about what you post on social media sites about your work, routines and holidays.”
