AN update has been given on a scheme to put average speed cameras on some of Lancashire's most dangerous roads.

In January it was announced that eight routes across the county had been earmarked for the devices designed to reduce road casualties.

The first, the A6 London Road in Preston, went live in March.

A further three routes including the A657 near junction three on the M65, from Belmont to Scout Road, in Belmont, A565, are nearing completion but no firm enforcement dates have been set.

Work is yet to begin on the remaining four routes, which include the B6232 Grane Road in Haslingden between the A56 and the A6177 Elton Road junction with Sough Lane and the A682 Gisburn Road in Pendle between the A59 in Gisburn and Whittycroft Avenue, Blacko near Barrowford.

The cameras will detect licence plates and calculate a vehicle’s average speed by measuring the time taken to travel between two points.

On A675 near Belmont installation is nearly complete. There will be a period of testing and configuration before an enforcement date is set.

On the A682 installation due to commence in July and on B6232 Grane Road in June.

All eight routes are expected to be completed by the end of 2017.

In the past six years, 13 people have died on Lancashire’s roads and more than 400 have suffered injuries, 62 of them life-changing.

Changes have been made to plans for Preston New Road, Wrea Green and the A565 Southport New Road, Tarleton.
