MOORLAND wildfires in the South Pennines, which have flared up repeatedly throughout 2017, can be avoided if the public takes extra care, according to fire experts.

Several incidents have been reported in the hills above Todmorden and two large moorland fires were recorded on Rooley Moor, between Bacup and Stacksteads, within 24 hours in March.

Wildfires are said to pose a serious risk to beauty spots, wildlife, farm livestock and valuable habitats and the South Pennines Fire Operations Group (SPFOG) has issued an appeal for users to be vigilant.

Dominic Furby, wildfires officer, said: “Please be very careful when you are out on the moors. Dispose of any glass bottles and cigarettes in a responsible manner and remember to use your barbecue at home rather than on the moors.

“If you see a wildfire please report it through the 999 service giving its location as precisely as possible. We would also ask people to report anyone acting suspiciously.”
