STUDENTS from a Colne school got the chance to grill Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson.

Youngsters from Colne Primet Academy quizzed him on politics, London life and more during the question and answer session.

It follows an Academy trip down to Parliament earlier in the month, where students got a tour of the House of Commons and House of Lords, and gained a broader understanding of the workings of Westminster.

Mr Stephenson was quizzed on an array of issues during his visit to Primet, including his thoughts on Brexit, how he came to be an MP, and his priorities in the local area and for education specifically.

He also talked to the group about the upcoming general election and the importance of constituents using their right to vote.

It was part of a series of visits made to schools including Barrowford Primary School in Rushton Street, Barnoldswick CofE Primary School in Kelbrook Rd and St Philip's CofE Primary School in Leeds Road, Nelson.

Year nine Colne Primet student Victoria Nowak, 14, said: “It was very interesting hearing from Andrew Stephenson, and I also enjoyed the trip to London.

“We have had the opportunity to meet someone from Parliament, who has listened to our opinions and answered questions as well."

And Nathan O’Callaghan, 14, said: “I have learnt a lot about Andrew Stephenson and Parliament, and I liked the fact that Andrew is trying to get the Colne to Skipton railway line reopened.”

Headteacher Lynne Blomley said: "We would like to say a huge thank you to Andrew Stephenson for taking time out of his extremely busy diary to talk to our students, and answer their questions.

“Opportunities such as these are invaluable to our students, giving them a forum to be inspired by topics not always covered by the curriculum, and to enhance their knowledge on different subject areas.

"It was lovely to see them so engaged during this visit, and learning more about the world of Politics and the importance of using their voice to influence positive changes.

“We look forward to continued development and enhancement of our enrichment programme, to give students the very best opportunities for their future.”
