A LANDMARK building in Colne’s transformation will be complete when a well-known wine bar and deli relocates there next month.

Bosses at Turners, in Barrowford, have confirmed they are looking to move into the former Tubbs of Colne premises before the end of May.

Empty for the past nine years, the upper level of the old gifts and jewellery emporium, at the corner of Princess Street, has been transformed into apartments.

Steve Turner, who owns Gisburn Road based Turners, said: “The building offers better opportunities for what we do.

“We are also hoping to open up the basement as a wine-tasting cellar, which will complement what we already offer.”

“Hopefully we will also complement what is already there in Colne.

"We are looking to be in there, if everything goes according to plan, by the end of May.”

The wine bar specialists is not the first venture to have its eye on the premises, which once served as a police station.

Initially the team behind The Venue, on the opposite side of Albert Road, had considered taking on the building as an eaterie.

The forecourt has also been used as a temporary venue over the past few years during the town’s popular rhythm and blues festival.

Grahame Wharton, of Grahame’s Poultry, a member of Colne Town Centre Forum, welcomed the announcement.

He said: “We are getting a tidy little night-time economy together at the bottom of Albert Road and this will only improve things.

“The Euronics shop, which used to be in Barrowford, has also moved into the old Roy Jowett’s electrical store in Albert Road as well so the town is doing well.”

Several new venues have changed the face of the lower end of Colne in recent years, beginning with the conversion of the old Conservative Club into The Venue.

Venues including The Green Chimney, 12 Bar, Esquire and No. 62, at the former JJ’s premises, have all helped to make the town an increasingly popular weekend location in Burnley and Pendle.
