DARWEN will be going back to medieval times this weekend with a ‘bigger and better’ celebration for St George’s Day.

An action-packed day has been planned by the town council and an events team in the market square on Saturday from 11am to 4pm.

Re-enactment group Historia Nomannis will be putting on a range of displays throughout the day.

A weapons display will kick things off followed by a dragon display and fashion show.

There will then be a Punch and Judy show, the arming of the knight and a main combat display.

There will also be face painting, crafts and stalls and the North West Reptile Club will be making an appearance with some of their animals.

Samantha Taylor, part of the Darwen Town Centre Partnership Board, set up a group last year to help the council organise events in the town such as the St George’s Day celebrations.

She said: “This is going to be bigger and better than it has ever been. A lot of thought and time has gone into getting this sorted.

“There’s going to be something for everyone and I’m especially excited about Historia Nomannis coming to educate the little ones.”
