SOAP star Gemma Atkinson has become the new president of Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary in Ramsbottom.

The Emmerdale actress has taken over from Ted Robbins, who has stepped down to occupy the vice president role.

She said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be the president of this superb animal sanctuary.

“I am a massive animal lover, I have two dogs myself who I adore and I feel it’s vital that people stand up for animals, who cannot speak for themselves.

“Bleakholt is a fantastic sanctuary, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and we want to make sure it remains here to ‘Care for those who have no one’ as our motto says, for at least another 60 years.”

She organised the recent black tie ball for Bleakholt’s 60th anniversary.
