To coincide with Accrington Food Festival on Saturday, June 3, an ‘Oops Upside Your Head’ world record attempt will be taking place.

More than 600 people are wanted to form a human chain to carry out the disco dance at St James’ Church from 3pm.

The dance involves people sitting in rows and swaying from side to side to the sound of song by The Gap Band.

The existing world record is 491 people and was set by a group in Essex supporting a local hospice.

Guests are also being encouraged to dress for the occasion to carry out the 1980’s dance and wear their brightest satin slacks, leg warms and skirts.

The attempt is the idea of market trader Evonne Harwood, who runs the Pink Magpie Vintage Emporium in Warner Street and organised the Dickensian Christmas market.

She said: “It’s a boost for morale, times are hard for everyone right now.

“Hopefully we will be able to get a lot of people along, and it’s all for a good cause.

“It should give a big boost to the town and get everyone along to see what’s on offer, the food festival is also a popular show.

“It would be extra special to see people dressed up in 1980s clothing - the brighter the better.

“It would be good to get that boost and get Accrington known for something nice.”

The event will also be raising money for the mayoral charity fund in Hyndburn.

People from across Hyndburn are being encouraged to get involved with the event.

Rev Ian Enticott, from St James’ Church, said: “We are a church involved with the community.

“We held the re-enactments here at last year’s food festival but this will be the first time we’ll have had so many people trying to do coordinated dancing.

“If you want the social media video you will have a great laugh at our attempts. But you can probably do much better - so come along on the day and help us to break this world record.”

The organisers are getting the event involved as part of Accrington Food Festival which is arranged by Scott Dawson Advertising.

Last year the food festival attracted more than 14,000 visitors.

The leader of Hyndburn Council Miles Parkinson said: “It’s all about having fun in Accrington.”
