A FATHER suffered burns to his face after an overheated deodorant can exploded in his home.

Ste Kennery, 33, had been cooking at his house in Taylor Avenue, Blackburn, when the aerosol, that had been left near the gas hob, burst into flames.

His wife, Lisa, 34, said the retail manager suffered burns to his face and hands and was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital before being transferred to the burns unit in Preston.

Mrs Kennery said it was a frightening experience.

She said: “I heard a loud bang from my car and ran in and saw what had happened.

“The explosion managed to set fire to the blender, as well as causing smoke damage to the ceiling and the cupboards.

“It was very scary, our daughter Paige was upset at the time as you can understand.

“We’ve definitely learnt a lesson, we won’t be leaving anything near the hob while we cook again.”

Chris West, watch manager at Blackburn fire station, said: “The accident occurred as a result of the deodorant can being left in a shopping bag too close to the gas hob whilst the occupant was cooking.

“The radiated heat from the gas hob heated the aerosol can causing the contents to boil which in turn created an increase in pressure within the aerosol can.

“This build-up of pressure caused the metal can to fail and the contents to spread across the ignited gas hobs.

“As the contents were flammable this created a momentary ‘ball of fire’ which resulted in burns.”
