AN empty house in the Sudell area of Darwen has is to be compulsorily purchased by the borough council.

Neighbourhoods boss Cllr Arshid Mahmood has authorised officials to buy the privately-owned property in Olive Lane.

The move has been welcomed by Cllr Roy Davies, Liberal Democrat representative for Sudell.

Council officers said in a report: “The property has been the subject of numerous complaints as a result of vandalism and anti-social behaviour due to the fact that it is unoccupied.

“In addition, an incidence of arson has resulted in fire and smoke damage to the kitchen.

“Attempts have recently been made to purchase the property by agreement, without success.”

Cllr Davies said: “This is brilliant news but long-overdue. The house has been the subject of vandalism by children and fly-tipping.

“This should have been done a couple of years ago.”
