A COMMUNITY group in Accrington teamed up with councillors to help clean up the local area.

Laneside Residents Association worked with deputy Hyndburn Council leader Cllr Paul Cox to help remove waste from the streets.

The skips were located at the junction of Haywood Road and Ribblesdale Avenue for people to use to get rid of their rubbish.

The project was aimed at giving residents the opportunity of disposing of waste that had accumulated in their properties.

Chairman of the residents association Malcolm Sommerville said: “We have had request to put a clean up day on from some of the residents.

“These events really do benefit the area and helps to keep the area tidy.

“Cllr Paul Cox always helps out and is never afraid to get hands on. He was helping carry rubbish and assisting residents in moving junk into the skip.”

Organisers have said the recent event helped people clear more than two tonnes of refuse from around the estate.

Cllr Cox said: “This kind of event encourages members of the community to get rid of that household waste that may have been collecting around the home.

“Also it allows people who don’t drive or have access to transport the ability to get rid of waste.”
