Police said that around 12.40pm on November 24 the 84-year-old victim had an envelope which contained £600 taken from her bag whilst shopping in the British Heart Foundation Shop in The Mall shopping centre.

The woman had just withdrawn the money from the Nationwide Building Society in King William Street and it is thought that she was followed and targeted by the thief.

PC Graeme Waring said: “This theft is still under investigation and despite it being a few months ago, we are determined to find the person responsible.

“To think that someone would target an elderly woman in this way is callous. What makes this all the more despicable is that the victim had taken the money out to buy currency for a holiday.

“I am asking anyone who recognises the woman in the picture to come forward as we think she may be able to assist us with our investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting crime reference ED1618061.
