A WEATHER station which has suffered heavily from vandalism has been pulled down by Blackburn with Darwen Council.

The brick structure in Bold Venture Park was deemed ‘structurally unsafe’ and in danger of collapse after a structural engineer carried out a report.

It has now been demolished apart from the base which has been left in place in case the friends group decides it wants to put another structure in its place.

Cllr Dave Smith, leader of the parks committee on Darwen Town Council, said: “This structure was deemed to be very dangerous.

“Kids kept on pulling the metal barriers down around it.

“The friends are continuing to look at ways to replace the structure as we know we can’t put up an exact replica of the original as we had hoped.”

The brickwork station was decommissioned during the 1970s.

The friends group started to put together an application for a Heritage Lottery Grant to recreate the original Victoria timber structure which was knocked down and replaced with the brick station.

However it has since been concluded a wooden structure would be in danger of being vandalised again but at the same time it was discovered that an exact replica would be the only way to receive funding.

The friends group is now looking at alternatives to replacing the weather station.
