Your guide to Blackburn Town Centre

2:24pm Tuesday 3rd July 2007

Blackburn town centre dates back to the bronze age.

The Doomsday book mentioned the Parish Church of St Mary's, which stood on the site of what is now Blackburn's Cathedral.

The Cathedral is situated in the centre of the town and houses a renowned collection of religious art.

The centre is currently undergoing a transformation.

Efforts are being made to attract people to live in the centre again with the building of new flats in Mincing Lane.

In October (2007) a 66m redevelopment of the shopping centre will start.

This will eventually trigger the closure of the market which will redeveloped.

Much of the shopping quarter is currently being re-paved.

There are plans for a new bus station and apartments are set to be built in the grounds of the Cathedral.

In five years time the centre will look very different from today.
