ONE of the last remnants of the former Huncoat power station is due for demolition - nearly 30 years on.

The cooling towers and main complex at the site off Altham Lane were mostly pulled down in October 1988.

But one smaller part-two and part-three storey building was allowed to remain unscathed.

Now the Derbyshire-based CWC Group has applied for the crumbling structure to be torn down ahead of an anticipated redevelopment of the site.

Demolition agent John Taylor, of Accrington-based Hardcore Crushing Ltd, said in a planning statement that the building had been ‘vandalised to the point of dereliction’ and was ‘now in a dangerous condition’.

“It is a derelict, dangerous structure which should have been demolished when the main power station was demolished,” he added.

Mr Taylor has told Hyndburn Council’s development control department that the wider site will be the subject of redevelopment under a separate planning application.

The CWC Group, which has land interests nationwide, has earmarked the Huncoat Power Station site for a ‘residential’ development on its website.
