POLICE in Burnley became shepherds at lunchtime today as 23 sheep blocked a road.

A community support officer was despatched to move the flock from the highway at 1pm.

He managed to shepherd the animals into a co-operative resident's garden on Moseley Road bewtween Burnley Wood and Rosehill while colleagues at the station tried to trace the farmer who owned them.

Inspector Paul Gaynor said: "It all adds the the rich variety of policing."
