A COUNCILLOR has called for more volunteers to join a car park marshalling system aimed at tackling traffic issues at Pleasington Cemetery in Blackburn.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has funded the scheme which will be in place for large funerals following complaints about congestion and parking at the Tower Road cemetery.

Cllr Parwaiz Akhtar, chair of the Muslim Burial Consultative Forum, has written to Mosques in the area to consider providing additional volunteers to support the 24 that are already in place.

In a letter he said: "We are happy to formally train any volunteers who you nominate and in turn these volunteers can then support the Mosque to better manage car parking when there are lots of visitors for prayers and events."

He said: "This problem has been going on for years. When there is a funeral we have a lot of cars which obviously leads to parking problems.

"The council has listened and I am grateful for all the people who helped get this in place.

"Anyone who wants to participate can do."
