A CINEMA club is looking for venues to host film screenings and is planning a three-day festival later in the year.

The Grand Unit 5 Social Cinema, which show films in the Pendle area, hosts monthly showings at various locations.

The club, which uses projection and sound equipment donated by Cinema For All, was formed more than a year ago by the Brierfield In-Situ art organisation.

At first, the venue was Brierfield Mill, but recent development work there has led to them ‘going on the road'.

Screenings have been held at Jim’s Vegetarian Restaurant in Colne, Booth’s cafe in Barrowford, Brierfield library and Clarion House in Nelson.

Paul Hartley director of In-Situ, said: “The Grand Unit 5 Social Cinema is looking for venues interested in hosting a screening in Pendle.

“Venues must be able to fit a large projection screen and a minimum of to 35 to 40 audience members.

“It could be a restaurant, factory or a social space like a community centre.

“It would be great to get more venues involved and we could possibly them the film to the surroundings as we did recently with the event at Clarion House, a place associated with radicalism where we showed Suffragettes.”

Showings are normally on the last Thursday of each month with doors opening at 7pm and the movie starting at 7.30pm.

Films shown range from adult horror like ‘Dusk Till Dawn’ to children’s films and vintage classics such as ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

Mr Hartley said the group are also in the early stages of planning a film festival for later this year.

He said: “We’ve got something planned for the first or second weekend in September where we would host films on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday.

“In would be fantastic to get some more venues involved in time for this which I feel would be very popular.

“The reason why the club was formed in the first place is that cinema provision has been lost in Pendle.

“When we asked people what kind of entertainment they wanted us to provide they said a cinema."

“The Grand Unit 5 Social Cinema is a way of letting people see films on the big screen."
