BURNLEY Leisure is set to introduce low-cost initiatives for juniors and over 60s at its swimming pools to replace free schemes.

‘Quid-a-kid’ sessions at St Peter’s and Padiham leisure centres will be launched during the Easter holidays.

They will offer youngsters aged 16 and under more opportunities to enjoy swimming for £1 with two afternoon sessions every day Monday to Saturday starting at 1pm and 2.30pm.

A special offer will also be put in place allowing over 60s to join Burnley Leisure’s monthly swim membership for £19.99 without paying a joining fee.

Swimmers over 60 who do not want monthly membership will be able to take advantage of a pay-as-you-swim option at a cost of £2.80.

It will replace the free swimming scheme for youngsters under 16 and over 60s which was introduced by Burnley Council in 2009 and has continued despite Government funding ending in 2010.

Gerard Vinton, chief executive, said: “We have some fantastic facilities at our two leisure centres and lots of different membership packages and options available.

“We will launch £1 sessions for juniors and starting this Easter there will be 12 sessions a week at both our pools, which we hope will attract many more young people during the school holidays.”
