FORMER Ribble Valley and Nelson and Colne MP Lord David Waddington has died - aged 87.

The Burnley-born Tory politician served in many senior roles.

He was Home Secretary and government Chief Whip under Margaret Thatcher.

When John Major succeeded her as Prime Minister in 1990, he became leader of the House Lords late becoming Governor of Bermuda.

He served as MP for Nelson and Colne from 1968 to 1974, as MP for Clitheroe from 1979 to 1983 and then the successor to the Ribble Valley constituency from 1983 to 1990.

For most of his political career the former barrister lived in Sabden.
