And Ross Knowles immediately apologised and then called the police and told them what he had done.

Knowles, of Blackburn Road, Darwen, pleaded guilty to assaulting Miss Taylor. He was sent on bail to Preston Crown Court to be sentenced after magistrates were told the offence put him in breach of a suspended prison sentence.

Parveen Akhtar, prosecuting, said Knowles contacted Miss Taylor at 7am, asking if he could come round.

“She assumed he had been drinking all night and refused,” said Miss Akhtar.

“Despite that he turned up half an hour later and asked to use her phone so he could call a taxi. Instead he started looking through her phone and discovered missed calls from a male.”

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said Knowles had actually seen entries on her Facebook account which had upset him.

“He threw the phone not really intending for it to hit her,” said Mr Taylor.

“When he saw the injury to her eye he said he was sorry and rang the police.”
