SAM Vokes is dreaming of Wembley as he aims to continue his own impressive FA Cup goalscoring record against Lincoln City today.

The Wales international has scored in five of the last six rounds Burnley have been involved in the cup, dating back to the third round exit at his boyhood club Southampton in 2013/14.

Vokes is relishing the Clarets cup run with tomorrow’s tie Burnley’s first in round five in six years.

“The cup is an important one for us because we’re not playing as many games as we have done previously in the Championship,” said the 27-year-old.

“The cup has been good for us so far and we want to keep that run going.

“I know since I’ve been here we’ve been involved in more relegation and promotion battles so the cup hasn’t been a big preference really. But, for us at the minute, it’s a good chance for us to make the quarters.

“I would love to get there (Wembley) and play.

“It’s somewhere that I’ve never played myself and it would be great to get that far if we can.”

Victory over the Imps would leave Burnley one win away from a semi-final at Wembley.

Vokes has been to a final as a fan, watching the Saints lose in Cardiff to Arsenal in 2003, and he believes the cup remains as important as it’s ever been in the modern era.

“I was brought up to love the FA Cup; it’s a massive competition,” he added. “It’s one that you want to be involved in and get as far as you can. For me personally it’s a huge competition.

“I am a Saints fan so I didn’t really see many finals! There were a couple of finals early on at the old Wembley that I remember and I went to the one at the Millennium Stadium. It’s always a big event and we all remember watching FA Cup finals when we were young.”

Burnley made light work of Championship opposition in Bristol City in the fourth round, with Vokes setting them on their way to a 2-0 victory.

Today’s non-league opponents have already beaten three higher level opponents in this year’s competition, including Championship opposition in Ipswich and Brighton, but Vokes insists there is no way the Clarets will underestimate the non-league side.

“Something that we’re not going to do is take teams for granted because it’s important that you respect your opposition,” he said.

“Sides like Lincoln have done fantastic to reach this stage and I’m sure they’ll be up for it and looking to progress as well. It’s definitely important that you don’t take these teams for granted.

“That’s what happens in the FA Cup and that is where you get the shocks when complacency sets in. We won’t be in that mindset at all and I know, working with the gaffer, he won’t let us be like that.

“It’s important that we don’t take teams for granted, it’s important that we respect them because they’ve got this far in the cup because they’re a good side.

“I’m sure that they’ll come here and try to make it tough for us. I’m sure it will turn in to a typical FA Cup tie. It’ll be one that they are looking forward to and it’ll be a big game for them.

“They’ll try and make it as ugly as they can for us. They’ll be full of confidence as well because they’re doing well in their own league.

“It’s a game I’m sure they’re looking forward to and it’s a big chance for both teams to get to the quarters.”
