MORE than £50,000 has been awarded to schools and organisations in the region for a range of community projects.

The money has been granted by the Big Lottery Fund which has shared more than £4million with 98 projects throughout the country.

Among the beneficiaries is Rockwood Nursery School in Burnley which has been given £10,000 to create a multi-sensory garden.

The outdoor space for children with special educational needs will aim to improve their emotional wellbeing, as well as develop language and communication skills.

Education Business Partnership’s Steps Ahead programme in Accrington has been granted £8,170 which will be used to run a voluntary internship programme for young people during college holidays and for those not in education.

The project provides an opportunity to work with employers and gain job skills to help entry into work.

Co-founder and director Emma Woan said: “We’re really pleased and this money will make a big difference in this area.”

A total of £9,995 has been given to Salesbury CE Primary School’s Play Together scheme.

The funding will be used to create an outdoor environment that will mean children can engage in outdoor play.

Colne’s West Street Community Primary School was awarded £9,990 for a project which aims to develop physical, communication and language skills through play.

The money will provide a giant playhouse, easel tables, water wall with damming station, den posts and a giant whiteboard.

Ribblesdale Wanderers Cricket and Bowling Club in Clitheroe was given £4,200 to create a disabled toilet facility and wheelchair access for members and guests.

Chairman Mark Graham said: “We have been trying to get this funding for two years so I’m very pleased that it has been granted now.”

The Enchanted Nature Trail project at Chorley’s Duke Street Primary School was handed £9,995 to promote outdoor learning.
