A CONSULTATION into possible new uses of the land formerly home to Pendle's Urban Altitude outdoor adventure park has been labelled a 'sham'.

Pendle Council is asking residents for their views on the future of the site in Vivary Way, Colne.

The land, owned by the council but leased by Pendle Leisure Trust, was home to the outdoor adventure climbing facility until it closed in April last year.

Conservative opposition leader, Cllr Joe Cooney, has hit out at the consultation saying it was 'a sham' and claimed the current Labour and Lib Dem administration want to sell the land for car parking.

Cllr Mohammed Iqbal, leader of Pendle Council, said: "This land is going to have a new lease of life and we’re keen for local people to give us suggestions for its future use.

"People need to bear in mind the fact that the council supports the reinstatement of the railway line from Colne to Skipton, should it be re-opened in future.

“If the rail track got the go ahead at some point, the route goes through this land.

“That’s why we’re looking for a use which will not stop this possible development.”

Prior to the opening of climbing facility the the trust used the land for outdoor sports on an all-weather pitch.

Cllr Joe Cooney said: "If Labour and the Liberal Democrats get their way it will be a car park.

"The site never should have been closed in the first place.

"Where was the public consultation on that decision?

"Along with my Conservative colleagues we've already identified two potential uses that will keep it as a leisure facility for all residents of Pendle.

"I call on the failing administration to drop their plans to sell it, accept they were wrong and commit, like I have, to keeping leisure activities on that site."

Urban Altitude shut less than three years after opening because the centre was not earning as much revenue as expected.
