A MAN has been arrested and detained under the Mental Health Act after a three men were assaulted at a mosque.

The incident occured at around 3.30pm yesterday inside a mosque in Bicknell Street, Blackburn.

The man, who is a regular attendee, is believed to have assaulted the men with a walking stick.

One of the men suffered a cut to his leg and was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment.

A second man suffered a shoulder inujury and was also taken to hospital while a third man received minor injuries which did not need treatment.

A 22-year-old man from Blackburn was arrested on suspicion of assault and affray but has now been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Insp Ilyas Mohmed said: "While this must have been a frightening incident for those inside the mosque I would like to reassure the community that we do not believe there were any racial or political motives behind it and a man has been arrested and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

"We have been liaising with mosque leaders following the incident and have kept them fully informed and we will continue to carry out reassurance patrols in the area.”
