The couple were on the way to their reception at Cafe Cargo in Foulridge when the incident happened.

Police attended the scene just after 3pm when they discovered the couple were stranded.

Mrs Garnett, 23, later praised officers on the Burnley and Padiham Police Facebook page, saying: “Thank you so much for helping us.We had a fabulous evening!

“Thanks again the new Mr and Mrs garnett x.”

PC Peter Haworth responded to the incident and when he found that nobody was hurt said he was more than happy to help the happy couple.

He put the ribbon from the car on to his police vehicle to mark the occasion.

He said: “Thankfully there were no injuries but one of the cars, an older model Rover, was taking a couple from Colne from their wedding ceremony to their reception.

“Unfortunately the car was too badly damaged to continue.

“I couldn’t leave the newlyweds stranded on their big day so I offered them a lift in the police car.

“It was about five miles to the reception venue. I’m not sure at any time they thought that’s the way they were going to arrive at their wedding celebration.

“Hopefully they had a brilliant night with their family and friends. I was only too happy to help them and I’m sure they’ll remember it in the years to come.”

The couple are now off enjoying their honeymoon in Scotland.

Mr Garnett is also known in the area for being the guitarist and singer in Colne folk rock band The Folkestra.
