SCORES of mourners gathered to pay their respects to an ‘inspirational’ teenager who collapsed and died in a rural road.

The funeral of Oliver McIvor, who was found dead in Back Lane, Sabden two weeks ago, was held at St Leonard’s Church in Padiham on Saturday.

The 17-year-old, who was due to join the Army’s Duke of Lancaster regiment next month, was carried into the church in a coffin draped with the Union Flag while flowers spelled out his name.

Mourners packed out the church as family members shared memories of the former Padiham Primary and Shuttleworth College student and sang Amazing Grace.

The service was led by Canon Mark Jones. He said: “There are times when life throws such sadness it is almost too much to bear. Today is one of those times. Even those who do not know him have been moved by this tragic loss.

“He was a young man with so much potential. He was recently accepted for training with the Army and had received his number. He was so much looking forward to joining the Duke of Lancaster regiment.

“Many teens go through a phase of being a bit remote and embarrassed by their family but Oliver was not like that. He was a loving, caring, affectionate member of the family.

“He was always pleasant and polite. He was a blessing as a son, brother and grandson.”

Oliver leaves behind brothers and sisters Romilly, Charlie, Rhianne, Megan, Fearne, Ellie, Gabriel, his mother Tracey Barnett, stepdad, Matt Barnett and dad Vincent McIvor. Standing up In church, younger brother Charlie described Oliver as his ‘inspiration’.

He said: “He always will be. I know he will watch over me for years to come.

“You will be missed by all and I will use this day not only to mourn but to celebrate your life.”

Oliver was carried out of the church to the sound of Birdy’s ‘Wings’ before mourners continued onto Padiham Cemetery where he was buried.

Donations are also being received in his memory for a charity to be decided. For more information contact Alderson and Horan Funeral Services on 01282 427483.
