A WOMAN was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured skull after being hit by a car close to a supermarket.

Police were called to Hollymount Way in Rossendale, near to Asda, after reports the 21-year-old Bacup woman had been hit by a grey Ford Focus at around 5.15pm yesterday.

The woman was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with initial fears she had suffered a fractured skull.

But a police spokesman said the head injury turned out to be less serious and the hospital was being prepared to release her last night.

The male driver of the Ford was not seriously injured. He is said to have stopped at the scene and no arrests have been made.

Hollymount Way was closed for three hours whilst the woman was treated and accident investigation work was carried out.

A police spokesman said: "We were called to Hollymount Way in Rawtenstall just before 5.15pm on January 4 to reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a grey Ford Focus.

"The pedestrian, a 21-year-old woman from Bacup, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with a suspected fractured skull. Her injuries are now thought to be less severe.

"The male driver of the Ford is not thought to have been seriously injured. No arrests have been made.

"A road closure was put in place but was fully re-open by 8.20pm."
