PEOPLE are calling for more to be done to tackle speeding motorists using a Darwen road ‘like a race track’.

People living in Cranberry Lane have said that people are driving up to 70mph down the residential street which includes a blind bend.

Residents have said they are particularly concerned that children using Blackburn with Darwen Gymnastics Club, located in the road, are going to get ‘wiped out’ or ‘killed’ if measures such as speed bumps are not put in place.

Police have said they intend to monitor the area and any offenders will be dealt with.

Bron Halliwell, who lives in Cranberry Lane, said: “Someone is going to get killed, it’s as simple as that.

“We very often have lots of people trying to pick kids up from gymnastics and people are whizzing down the lane right round the blind bend.

“We need measures put in place from top to bottom and I personally think that needs to be speed bumps.

“We have had animals killed and lots of near misses. Something does need to be done before a real tragedy happens.”

Blackburn with Darwen Council has said it will look into the issue as road safety was a ‘big concern’.

The issue of traffic in the road was highlighted last year when the council approved plans for 110 homes between Cranberry Lane and Jacks Key Lodge.

At the time, former planning committee member Cllr Paul Browne said the traffic ‘was bad enough as it is’ without houses attracting more cars.

Cllr John Roberts, who represents Marsh House ward, said: “I am seriously concerned because it’s not residents that are doing this it’s people from elsewhere.

“It is being used like a race track and one day someone is going to be walking their dog and they are going to get wiped out.”

Sgt Dave Sherrington said: “Anyone speeding in Cranberry Lane is likely to be causing a danger to other road users due to the narrowness and residential nature of the road.

“While it is not a high traffic area, we will be monitoring speeding using our Community Speedwatch Team and offenders will be dealt with.”

Cllr Phil Riley, executive member for regeneration, said: “Road safety is a big concern and we are happy to look into this.”
