A FIFTH generation market trader from Blackburn is adding an exotic twist on his families heritage in the food industry.

David Wilcock, 33, has just opened 'Hugo Burrito' in Blackburn Market, serving burritos, tacos and other 'Tex-Mex' inspired food.

His family has a long history with the market dating back to the 1800's. Many of Mr Wilcok's family also sold a variety of food products.

Mr Wilcock, who lives in Knuzden, said: “This is a dream come true for me.

"My family have been on the market since the late 1800's and the original Greens Poultry is still going to this day.

"More recently my great grandad Stan Green worked on Blackburn Market in the 1930s and 40s.

“I worked on the stall myself from being 13-years-old. and like many others here, market trading is in our blood.

"I'm thrilled to be back on Blackburn Market with our own venture.”

His grandmother also started the popular Beryl's chicken stall in the old Ainsworth Street market in the 1970s and employed Mr Wilcock's mum and aunty.

Mr Wilcock has also named one of the Burritos from his new stalls menu the Berilo’s Chicken Chipotle in a tribute to David’s grandma Beryl, 81.

The stall sources the majority of its ingredients locally and is also employing four people in the area.

The family have been without a stall on the market since the market moved site, and it is something that Mr Wilcock is glad to put right.

He said: "We owned Beryl's Chicken Stall but when the market moved five years ago we decided not to move with it and it's been bothering me even since, which is why I'm doing it.

My great grandad and his dad were both on the market going back I believe to 1865."

Grandma Beryl Preston, formerly Green, said: “I started working on the markets when I was 11, I started on the old open market.

"Even when I moved away to work elsewhere I still ended up working on the family market, and I was back working there years later.

“It’s good that we have the tradition of being a market family, there’s not many left these days.”
