A 33-YEAR-OLD woman died after being hit by a taxi in Salford city centre.


Mikayla Ferguson-Burns, from Rawtenstall, was struck by a Toyota Prius private hire car on Trinity Way, close to its junction with Chapel Street, just after 3am on Saturday.

The Rossendale woman suffered serious head injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.


But Greater Manchester Police confirmed that she had died later that day as a result of the incident.

An investigation is now underway by the force’s serious collision investigation unit.

Officers said the taxi driver remained at the scene afterwards and is helping police with their enquiries. He has not been arrested.

Mrs Ferguson-Burns’ parents, Jackie and Terry Ferguson, were too upset to speak at their home in Hardman Avenue, Rawtenstall, last night.

She was married to Andrew Burns, who was also unavailable for comment.

In a statement released by the family through police, they said: “Mikayla was amazing, simply amazing. She has so many family members and friends that are going to miss her dearly.

“She was beautiful, intelligent, hilarious and so, so caring.

“Mikayla always put others before herself and she will never be forgotten”.

One of the family’s neighbours said: “Mikayla was a lovely woman and we were all really shocked when we heard what had happened. Everyone is thinking about her family and friends.”

Several of Mikalya’s friends took to Facebook to pay tribute.
Jean-Marie Eaton said: “Seriously, seriously sad news. 

“Such a beautiful lady inside and out. 

“I just have memories from primary school and sixth form of you having me in stitches. 

“R.I.P Mikayla Ferguson-Burns my thoughts go out to your close friends and family.”

Eugene Matias also said: “I have just found out one of the kindest souls I have had the privilege to meet has passed away. 

“Rest in peace Mikayla Ferguson-Burns. My prayers go out to all her family and friends. Your warm smiles will be missed.”

Jenna Knowles, who runs her own design company, said:

“The world lost a beautiful soul and amazing girl. RIP Mikayla Ferguson-Burns.

“Andy and I are sending all our love to family and friends and everyone who is in unimaginable pain right now, thinking of you. The world makes no sense.”

Road traffic police in Salford are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

PC Paul Shore said: “This is such a tragedy. This young woman had her whole life ahead of her.

“We have opened an investigation and we are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to speak to us.

“We want to be able to provide Mikayla’s family with the answers they deserve.”
