A DAY of giving and community support organised by staff and customers at a pub left those in receipt of kindness ‘tearful and overwhelmed’.

The Clifton Community, who operate from the Clifton Arms in Grimshaw Park, Blackburn organised ‘Giving Tuesday’ when they distributed 16 large Christmas hampers to people needing a boost around the town.

After the volunteers had finished their generous rounds, the volunteers then cooked hot food for the weekly Community Spirit event which helps feed and clothe the needy in the town centre.

Carole Davies, the licensee at the Clifton Arms, said the idea for ‘Giving Tuesday’ came from her customers.

She said: “We’re always doing some kind of fundraising and had the idea of giving a seasonal boost to those who may be suffering from ill health or are possibly a little bit isolated.

“Sixteen people were nominated to receive them.

“The items for the hampers were all bought by customers and staff at the pub and included, food, mince pies, chocolate, toiletries and candles.

“We visited people in Galligreaves, Feniscowles, Higher Croft, Roe Lee and Grimshaw Park.

“There was a lot of tears and people told us that it meant so much to them that their friends and neighbours cared so much.”

Sharon Jolley, 50, who has been battling cancer was one of the recipients.

She said: “This was a lovely boost to me and my family after a very tough year.

“Carol and the others at the Clifton Arms show kindness and generosity which overwhelms me and brings me to tears.

“It shows the best in folk and a true sense of community.”

The Clifton Community later visited the Wesley Hall, Feilden Street and gave out hot food and clothes to more than 30 visitors at the weekly event.

The Clifton will hold its Christmas party on Sunday with a free festive meal at 3pm followed by a free raffle and music from Andy Crosby.
