A FORMER world BMX champion raced to her former school to celebrate students’ achievements at its annual awards ceremony.

Stacey Mullock, who is the national development manager for the Youth Sports Trust, returned to Blessed Trinity RC College in Burnley, where she worked as part of the School’s Sports Partnership 11 years ago to present trophies to the class of 2016.

This year more students achieved top grades in English and maths than ever before at the Ormerod Road school with an increase in A and A*s in both subjects.

Stacey, who competed for 16 years and was a British, European and world BMX champion, said: “It is nice to come back.

“I worked at Blessed Trinity for three years and I work closely with the school in my current role so it is great to return on evenings like this and celebrate the success of the school.”

The top awards on the night included the contribution to the community, which went to Hope Hutchison for her work fundraising with the Catholic charity HCPT (Handicapped Children’s Pilgrimage Trust).

She also accompanied handicapped children on trips to Lourdes.

The specialist college humanities award went to Hannah Kay, who celebrated A*s in geography, sociology and history.

The progress award was presented to Amala Matthew, the student who made the most better than expected progress in school while Ryan O’Connor won the endeavour award, for overcoming difficulties during school life.

Headteacher Richard Varey said: “We are incredibly proud of the achievements of all our students.

“They are a credit to the school.”

The Sporting Commitment Award, named in memory of popular former teacher Mick Ennis, who died of cancer, went to Joe Skinner.

Mr Ennis was Joe’s mentor and encouraged his involvement in sport.

There were also awards for outstanding academic progress and outstanding GCSE results.

Roberto Arcangelo and Ben Eastwood received special prizes for never missing a day’s school from years seven to 11 while Rosie Booth received the contribution to college life while Ellie Cook was given the contribution to college faith life.

Awards were handed out to former students for each GCSE subject as well as vocational awards.
