RESIDENTS leaving near Burnley General Hospital have said workers are parking ‘inconsiderately close’ to their homes and causing a ‘nuisance’.

Those living in Millbank Crescent, off Casterton Avenue, said they were concerned about emergency vehicle access and blocked driveways.

The East Lancashire Hospital Trust has said it asks all staff to park responsibly.

Matthew Small, 40, who lives on the street, said: “It’s a worsening situation.

“Hospital staff seem to park their cars all round the crescent.

“They park both sides of the entrance road on the corners into the street and anywhere else they see fit.

“It’s come to a head now with cars outside most of the houses, sometimes blocking driveways and generally causing an eyesore and a bigger nuisance for most of the working day.

“I’ve noticed that most streets around Casterton Avenue and the hospital either have double yellows or residents only parking schemes.

“I’ve started to canvass the whole of Millbank Crescent to get a feel for the issue and will be raising a petition to call for a resolution to this problem.

“I don’t blame the staff, I blame the hospital who will not provide cheap or free staff parking in quite an expansive site which is forcing the staff to park where they can. Not only is it an eyesore but it’s dangerous.

“There isn’t room for an ambulance or fire engine to get on to the estate and parking on corners is forbidden in the highway code.”

The hospital provides a parking permit scheme to staff for around £13 per month but not all staff are prepared to pay.

Another Millbank Crescent resident said: “I’ve contacted the council on Monday and copied in our local councillor.

“It is dangerous and we are limited to let our children play out the front but again can’t due to the dangerous parking going on.

“This is in addition to the dangers of accidents, no access for emergency services and also is being unable to get on and off our estate.

“In addition we also get then parking on and across our drives.

James Maguire, acting director of estates and facilities at the trust, said: “The trust offers parking to staff, patients and visitors on all sites at a very reasonable price.

“We ask all staff that choose not to use the hospital car parks to park responsibly and be considerate.”
