Dr Meenakshi Chopra, an associate specialist doctor in psychiatry for Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, was warned time and again about taking rest periods, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service heard.

But the Delhi-trained medic was spotted sleeping while on shift on a number of occasions from 2009 to 2014, after carrying out extra mental health assessments in her own time, a misconduct panel in Manchester was told.

Colleagues also caught her using a staff photocopier for a 400-page legal report for a property dispute in India, and she was found to have used the trust’s internal mail to post out invoices for her husband’s private medical practice.

Stuart Denney, QC, for the General Medical Council, also produced evidence she had been arranging her daughter’s wedding when she was supposed to have been working.

Dr Chopra admitted she had been dishonest but insisted no patient had come to any harm over her behaviour, which had now improved.

But striking her off, panel chairman Paul Moulder said fellow doctors and members of the public would be “shocked” to find a medic asleep on the job, while being paid.

The doctor was dismissed by Lancashire Care after an internal hearing in 2014.
