The cars ended up blocking the pavement on the junction corner, police said.

The mum and her young son managed to walk away from the crash with no serious injuries.

A police spokesman said it was unclear if the other driver suffered from any injuries.

The crash is being treated as an accident with no arrests made.

Irene Johnson, who has lived on the road for 50 years, said while she did not know the cause of yesterday’s crash she had had concerns about the road for some time.

She said: “The road is getting bad now, people just keep racing each other. They go on both sides of the road. It’s erratic driving.

“People have to be careful when coming out of their driveway. Our hedge was ruined several years ago due to a car crashing into it.” Following the incident, Cllr Lisa Allen, who represents St Oswalds on Hyndburn Council, said efforts had been made to improve road safety.

Cllr Allen said: “The speed limit was dropped from 50mph to 40pmh to help correct bad driving.”

Another resident, Pat Stephenson, said accidents were not common but the road was known for bad driving. Police were accompanied by firefighters who helped remove the cars.

A police spokesman said: “The woman and her boy were left shaken after the incident but suffered no serious injuries. Both cars suffered damage to their fronts, with the Honda suffering damage to its left side. Luckily no-one went to hospital.”
