She has now taken steps to create a handwritten sign to try and deter people from behaving anti socially.

Miss Waeland said she has seen rats running around the rubbish as well as witnessing people urinating outside her house.

She said: “It’s horrible. The cash machine near the old post office is even worse, I’ve seen a man urinating there, it’s very stressful.

“It’s all over the place it’s such a tip. I keep trying to do something about it, but I’m sick of having to clear it up. I’m frightened of opening the door, I’ve seen rats running round out there, it’s disgusting.”

Miss Waeland has said the problem is particularly bad around Intack Post Office and by people using nearby takeaways and not disposing of their waste properly.

The council has been notified of the problem, and have acknowledged they have received several complaints.

Councillors attended the street on Friday to see what steps could be taken to prevent the problem.

However they said they need the help of residents to prevent the problem.

Cllr Tony Humphrys said: “I’m really getting annoyed at people who are continuously dropping litter there, it’s going all over the place and effecting the whole area.

“We’re going to try and do our best to get the message out to people, but people need to take responsibility themselves, there is only so much we can do.”

Calls have also been made for more bins on the street..

Cllr Jim Smith, Blackburn with Darwen Council’s executive member for environment, said: “People who make this sort of mess don’t seem to care about their borough or other people living here.

“The council doesn’t have any funding available for new litter bin installations at the moment. What we need is for people to think before they act.”
