Neighbours said they were shocked to hear about the incident on Sunday at 9pm and said the area was normally ‘quiet’.

One resident said: “It’s as quiet as anything around here, there’s never any trouble. It is a very private and isolated estate so you really wouldn’t expect it.”

Another neighbour said: “I heard the ambulance at around 9pm and there were also a lot of police cars.

“They are known as ‘the nice houses’ up there so I’m quite shocked really that something like this has happened.

“I know the guy who lives at the house is a dentist and he used to own some huskies.”

Yesterday the large detached house was cordoned off by police.

Crime scene investigators spent most of the day searching for evidence.

A neighbour said: “I’ve only been living here since June so I don’t know the neighbours well.

“I obviously saw all the police cars and the ambulance. The officers told me someone had been stabbed and not to worry.”

Cllr Graham Waugh, borough representative for Foulridge, said: “It’s a very sad situation, it’s a lovely area around here and I feel very sorry for everyone involved.

Officers have asked anyone who may have information to contact them.
