TWO siblings will be taking on a mammoth trek across the Great Wall of China to raise money for a brain injury charity.

Kath Jump, 42, and her brother James Walsh, 34, from Blackburn, will be tackling the 72-mile challenge later this month in aid of Headway after their dad Peter Walsh suffered a severe bleed on the brain last June.

Medics said only 40 per cent of people usually survive the condition which is caused by bleeding on the surface of the brain.

Peter, 71, spent six months in hospital and rehabilitation learning how to walk and talk again before returning home in December last year.

Mrs Jump, from Bank Hey Lane South in Blackburn, said she wanted to raise money for Headway, to thank them for supporting her family.

She said: “I think in comparison to cancer and heart disease, brain injuries are not very well known.

“My brother and I wanted to raise some more awareness of them.

“Dad’s condition had a big impact on the family and Headway helped us to understand what was going on a bit more and supported us.

“He had to learn to walk again and had to have speech therapy and just try to live a normal life again.

“Thankfully the help of Headway and local physios got him back on track and he is as well as he could be now, he’s made a remarkable recovery.

“The trek in China is a once in lifetime opportunity and we felt we should do to raise vital funds.”

Headway Blackburn with Darwen was established in 2004 and is organised and run by volunteers who have experience of caring for people with a brain injury.

The charity has an aim of supporting survivors of a brain injury and their families and carers.

Mrs Jump and her brother have already reached the £3,000 mark but are still looking for further sponsorship.

They will be taking on the trek over six days starting later this month.

Mrs Jump said: “The charity was really supportive throughout his rehabilitation which really was life-changing for him and for all of us.

“Brain injury is something you don’t get to understand unless you go through it or someone close to you does so we feel it is very important to raise awareness.

“We’ve never done any challenge of this calibre so it should be fantastic.”
