VANDALS who damaged a cross on a grave in Earby Cemetery have been described as ‘disrespectful’ and ‘mindless’.

Police have said the family of the deceased have been left greatly ‘distressed’ by the criminal damage which happened between September 22 and September 30.

No arrests have been made and no suspect descriptions have been issued.

Vandals are said to have gone in to the cemetery in Cowgarth Lane and cut the arms off the cross.

Earby Town Council chairman Cllr Chriss Tennant has branded the vandals ‘mindless’.

Cllr Tennant said: “It is staggering to be honest. I can’t imagine why someone would want to do this. There is no respect.

“It’s mindless, especially given that we are approaching Remembrance Sunday.

“A lot of people will be left angered by this. There will be a lot of people in Earby who have family members buried in that cemetery and they will be very upset.

“I would urge anyone who knows who did this to contact the police straight away so this family can have justice.”

PCSO Mark Hyde said: “Sometime between Thursday, September 22, and Friday, September 30, a handmade wooden cross was damaged on a grave in Earby Cemetery.

“The two photographs show the cross before and after the damage, please note the ends have been cut/broken off each of the arms of the cross.

“It goes without saying that this has caused a great deal of distress to members of the family of the deceased and I would ask anyone with any information that may lead to the offender to contact me in confidence, by emailing Mark.Hyde@lancashire.pnn.police.uk or on 101.”
