Ms Smith, from Wallasey, Merseyside, suffered head and neck injuries which proved fatal.

At the time of the accident she was taking part in a solo Leeds to Liverpool bike ride in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Since the fatal accident, her fundraising page has been inundated with financial pledges and messages of condolence.

Many of them came from residents in Pendle who wanted to show their sympathy to her family.

Ms Smith had set up a page on the Just Giving website entitled ‘Susan T’s Marks and Spencer Leeds to Liverpool Bike Ride MCNW’.

She had said on the site: “Fundraising is hugely important to Macmillan.

“Without people doing events, running marathons, climbing mountains, and donating in all the other ways that you can, Macmillan wouldn’t exist.”

A target had been set for the fundraising of £515, however by yesterday the amount raised was nearly £2,500, meaning almost five times the target had already been pledged.

Claire Singlehurst, director of relationship fundraising at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: ‘’As this is an ongoing investigation, we are unable to comment further at this stage.

“However, our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends at this difficult time.”

Tributes on the fundraising page have poured in.

Janine Whalley said: “We know what a truly amazing person you were and that you devoted your life to raising money for others.

“An inspiration to all.”

One anonymous tribute, read ‘such a tragic loss whilst completing an amazing act, RIP, from a family in Colne’, while another stated ‘I live in Foulridge and have just heard. I do not know you but felt the need to donate. Rest in Peace with the Angels’.

Elaine Waine’s tribute said: “Life can be so cruel sometimes.

“You were clearly a beautiful caring woman taken far too soon.

“God bless you my lovely.”

Police said nobody has been arrested after the crash.

Officers closed surrounding roads for several hours whilst investigation work was carried out.

At the time a police spokesman said: “We were called to Skipton Road, at the junction with Langroyd Road, in Colne.

“When we arrived an female cyclist had been pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.”
