‘YOBS’ who threw fireworks at police officers investigating the death of a nine-year-old boy in Blackburn have been described as ‘disgusting’ and ‘appalling’.

Officers were carrying out a forensic reconstruction in Whalley New Road as part of their investigation in to the death of Adam Limbada in Whalley New Road when they came under attack.

A police spokesman said: “Between 6pm and 9pm on Thursday officers carried out a forensic reconstruction in Blackburn.

“The reconstruction, in parts of Whalley New Road, Plane Street and Whalley Range, was part of our investigation into a road collision which resulted in the death of a nine-year-old boy on Thursday, August 4. During the reconstruction two fireworks were thrown into the scene.

“No-one was injured and no arrests made.”

Sergeant John Jennings-Wharton, who was overseeing the reconstruction, said: “I was disappointed on Thursday night, whilst reconstructing a fatal collision in Blackburn some people felt the need to throw fireworks at us.
“No-one was injured thankfully.”

Meanwhile community leaders and police union bosses have voiced their outrage at the attack.

Lancashire Police Federation chairman Rachel Baines said: “The police need the support of the public. Behaviour like this can only hinder what is a really sensitive and important investigation, particularly for the victim’s family.

“I would hope that those responsible see this and understand the seriousness of their actions both on the investigation and the police officers trying to bring justice for the family.”

Blackburn MP Kate Hollern said: “I am appalled at the behaviour of these individuals. Not only do they show disrespect for the family of the victim in this tragic case but they only serve to once again put local people at risk.
“I hope that the police are also able to find these individuals and deal with them in the appropriate way.”

Blackburn with Darwen Mayor Hussain Akhtar said: “This kind of behaviour is outrageous and disgusting.

“As a community we have to work with the police and not disrespect them. The police are doing a very good job and and people should not stop them from doing their job.”

“I would ask anybody who knows who did it to go to the police. We don’t want this kind of behaviour in Blackburn.”

Little Harwood ward councillor Pat McFall said: “It is disgusting to throw fireworks at anyone, never mind police officers tying to do their job. It is out of order.”

n The driver of the BMW, a 25-year-old man from Blackburn, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is due to answer bail next month.
