A COUNCILLOR is calling for a beauty spot to be tidied up after vandals ‘wrecked’ the area.

County councillor David Stansfield said he was shocked to discover that vandals had damaged the area surrounding The Halo in Haslingden.

He said that rubbish and debris has been thrown to one side spoiling the area as a tourism hotspot.

The lock for the disabled car park had been broken meaning people were driving up to the Halo and doing wheelies around it at night while ragwort had also been dumped in the carpark.

He said: “The Halo is a place that people visit to take in the breathtaking views and I was shocked to see how much it has been spoiled.

“It’s clear to see that people are spending a lot of time up there smoking illegal drugs with the stuff that’s being left behind,” he added.

In 2013 the spectacular Halo had a £28,500 facelift, with 650 new blue LED bulbs, powered by green energy, fitted.

According to Cllr Stansfield the lights have also been smashed and damaged.

He said: “I cannot believe it has been left to get in this state.

“I went up for a walk with my colleague and you can see why it attracts people to use it for a place to do certain things, including smoking drugs and vandalising the area.

“I think it’s time that we got an official clean up and made it a nice place to visit once again.

“The lights are not working and it looks a mess. What was the point of spending all of this money if it is going to be forgotten about?”
