Announcing the concert, Blackburn Rovers director Mike Cheston said: “We are delighted to confirm that Elton John will be performing at Ewood Park next summer.

“He is one of the biggest names in music and has a following which few other artists on the planet can compete with.

“It is obviously fantastic news for the people of Blackburn, and the surrounding areas that we are able to bring such a world star to the town and we are convinced it will be an occasion that the whole community talks about and remembers for years to come.”

Sir Elton has sold a staggering 250 million record worldwide in a career that spans five decades and in which he has won numerous awards from Grammys to being included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Although this will be his first show in East Lancashire, Elton has regularly performed in the North West, including a date at Bolton Wanderers Reebok Stadium in 2005 and 25 shows in Manchester since his first at the Free Trade Hall in 1971.

This year he released his 33rd studio album Wonderful Crazy Night, and over the summer has performed at the Apple Music Festival and headlined at Hyde Park in London.

The Blackburn date forms part of a worldwide tour promoting the new album but fans can also expect many hits from his extensive back catalogue.

The ultimate showman, the singer and songwriter, has over 4,000 live performances to his credit since launching his first tour in 1970.

Having performed at several of the world’s most recognisable venues – including residencies at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas – he continues to be one of this country’s biggest pop-culture exports.

His huge back catalogue includes top 10 hits such as Songs such as Crocodile Rock, Rocket Man and Candle in the Wind which he performed at the funeral of Princess Diana and which became the second biggest selling single of all-time. He also worked with Tim Rice on the hit musical the Lion King.

An unmistakable name in the history of popular music, Elton John has done it all – and then some. From being awarded multiple Grammys and BRITs, and even an Oscar and a Tony Award, Elton has proven his universal acclaim. In addition to selling more than 250 million records worldwide, through his partnership with lyricist Tim Rice Elton wrote the music for the feature film and Broadway stage production of ‘The Lion King”.

Tickets for the Blackburn concert go on sale at 10am on Friday from leading ticket agencies including ticketmaster.co.uk, seetickets.com and ticketline.co.uk.
