The youngster’s mum, Cayla Adams, said she was horrified to have to pick the sharp pieces of glass out of her son’s mouth after he began crying.

The 32-year-old said Cobie, who spent hours in hospital being X-rayed for fear he had swallowed the glass, is now scared to eat.

McVitie’s bosses said they had launched an investigation into the incident and are treating it as ‘serious’.

Miss Adams, of Lynthorpe Road, Blackburn, said: “Cobie was just sat quietly on the sofa, then while he was eating I heard a loud crunching sound which didn’t sound right.

“He immediately started crying and then he pulled glass out of his mouth.

“There’s no doubt the glass was in the biscuit, there was no other way it could have got there. He’s always a really good boy, and I didn’t let him out my sight.

“He’s only three, now he is scared to eat in case there is anymore glass in his food.”

The pharmacy assistant said she bought the biscuits, Cobie’s favourite treat, from Asda at Lower Audley Retail Park in Blackburn.

They had been sat in the cupboard unopened prior to the incident on Sunday.

After seeking medical advice on the phone from the NHS 111 Service, Miss Adams took her son to the Royal Blackburn Hospital to be checked over.

An X-ray revealed no signs Cobie had swallowed any glass, however doctors warned Miss Adams, glass does not always show up.

The toddler was discharged and his mum advised to keep a close eye on him for the next few days.

Cobie damaged his baby tooth, which is thought will not require repairs as it will be replaced with his adult tooth in future years.

Miss Adams, who also has a daughter age 15, said she is relieved the damage was not more serious.

She said: “It was a relief, it could have been so much worse, I was so happy when the results came up clear.

“My immediate thought was just worry, I was so panicked, but then I was angry that something like this could have happened.”

Miss Adams has now reported the issue to the manufacturer McVitie’s.

Community leaders said they were shocked to hear about the incident.

Cllr Mohammed Khan, leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “It is a very shocking event for any child and mother and one that is just not acceptable.

“I am very pleased that the child does not seem to be seriously injured.

“I hope the firm are taking appropriate action and are holding an investigation into why this has happened.”

A spokesman for McVitie’s said: “All our products are subject to rigorous quality checks before they leave our factories.

“We have spoken to Ms. Adams and reassured her that we are taking this issue very seriously and intend to make a thorough investigation into the possible cause, including an examination of the affected product.”

A spokesman for Blackburn with Darwen’s Trading Standards department, said: “This is a food safety issue, it has been reported to us and we are investigating it.”

Asda Blackburn said they were unwilling to comment as the incident involved a branding product.
