A 31-YEAR-OLD man led police on a 100mph plus chase after they spotted him driving on the M65 on Saturday.

Blackburn magistrates heard at the time David Yates was already on two sets of police bail for dangerous driving offences both of which involved ramming police vehicles.

Yates, of Monmouth Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without insurance and other than in accordance with a licence. He was committed in custody to Preston Crown Court to be sentenced on October 10.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said that around 2pm on Saturday police were alerted to the possibility that a red VW Golf had been involved in a making off from s petrol station without payment. An officer on the M65 saw the car and began to follow without activating sirens or lights.

“When he became aware of the police car the defendant sped off at 100mph despite the torrential rain and appalling road conditions,” said Miss Allan. “Just after Junction 5 there was a build up off traffic and he swerved onto the hard shoulder doing over 70 mph.”

Miss Allan said after undertaking numerous vehicles Yates rejoined the main carriageway and accelerated to over 100mph. He again used the hard shoulder to overtake, this time doing 80mph and then left the motorway at Junction 4, cutting up two cars as he did.

“As the officer came down the slip road he saw the Golf spinning out of control before colliding with a Land Rover Defender,” said Miss Allan.

“The officer blocked the Golf in with his police car ad then grabbed Yates as he got out of the car.”

Imran Hussain, defending, said his client accepted that the case would be sent to the Crown Court to be sentenced.
