FIRE officers have warned those with solid fuel heating systems to check their chimneys after a fire damaged a home and set off smoke detectors in a nearby telephone exchange.

At 6.55pm on Monday two crews attended a chimney fire at a property at Paris, off Ramsgreave Road, Blackburn.

Smoke from the chimney had caused an activation of the smoke detection system at the neighbouring telephone exchange on Ramsgreave Road to which another fire appliance attended.

Crew manager, Daryll Sturgess, said: “The smoke from the chimney fire activated the smoke detector in the property which was lightly smoke logged throughout this alerted the residents to call the fire service.

“We recommend that if you have a solid fuel fired heating system In your property, you have the flue regularly checked and cleaned by a competent person to ensure the system is able to work efficiently and safely.”
